Dealing with leaky diapers at night

August 19, 2014momstownBaby, Parenting, ToddlersNo comments
Sleep is so important for moms and babies, its frustrating when it gets interrupted for anything, especially a wet diaper!

Here are some things to try if your baby is leaking through their diapers at night:

1. Change brands

Every brand is a little different and those differences might be enough to stop night time leaks in your baby.

2. Go up a size

This one always worked for me. As soon as we started seeing night time accidents, we moved to the next size up and it usually solved the problem.

3. Use night diapers

These diapers tend to be more absorbant, especially for older kids.  We used them once our kids were toilet trained during the day but still needed protection at night.

4. Change them just before bed

When my kids were little, we'd often put them in pajamas well before we'd actually put them into bed.  This might mean the diaper they are wearing though the night could be wet before they go to sleep.  Try to change them as close to bedtime as possible.

5. Make sure the fit is right

If you are having issues with leaks, double check before you put them in bed that the ruffles around their legs are folded out and that the tabs are on tight.  (sounds obvious but putting a diaper on your baby becomes so automatic, you might not notice one of these things)

6. For boys only…

Another one that seems obvious but is actually really important – make sure his penis is pointing down.  And, I do mean down – if its pointing sideways, you could easily end up with a leak coming down his leg (trust me!)

If you've tried all these things are you are still dealing with leaks at night, you could try doubling up on the diapers at night.  For older kids, try to limit how much they are drinking before bed.

Even with all these strategies, you could still end up with the occassional leaky diaper at night.  When that happens, try to get them changed as quickly as possible so they fall back asleep.  This change is all business – keep the lights low (use just a night light or hall light if you can), don't sing or talk to you baby and keep the cuddling to a minimum (sometimes easier said than done!).  Get in and get out and hopefully you'll both be back asleep in no time.
